THE MALL WINS THE CUP

In the most exciting game in the SHL this year Mall Security won the Spirit Cup. They had an action-packed 3-2 win over the Moonwalking Giraffes in the shootout. The Mall was ahead 1-0 for a long period after Preston scored. Then the Giraffes came back to take the lead on two goals by Lachlan. Thomas H. then tied the game in the last minute and began an endless shootout. After more than ten rounds of shooters, Preston scored to win the game for the Mall. Jeremy and Kevin were outstanding in goal all game long.

The Moonwalking Giraffes earned a spot in the final on Monday with a 6-1 win over the Siamese Uburoos. Lachlan and Bob each had a pair for the Giraffes, with Walker and Matt S. scoring singles. Mitchell had the goal for the Uburoos. Kevin and Zaha were the goalies.

GIRAFFES EARN THEIR SPOT

The Moonwalking Giraffes stepped up in the second shift to win 5-2 over the Fuzzy Turtles. Lachlan had a hat-trick for the Giraffes, with Bob and A.J. adding singles. Tony and Matt M. scored for the Turtles. Jeremy and Kevin were the goalies. The Giraffes will now play the Siamese Uburoos in the semi-final tomorrow.

SIAMESE SHOOTOUT

The Siamese Uburoos edged out the Chubby Ferrets 4-3 in the shootout today. Mitchell and Alex each had a pair of goals for the Uburoos, with Alex scoring in the shootout. Riley had a hat-trick for the Ferrets. Kevin and Carson were the goalies. The Uburoos now advance to the semi-final on Friday.

THE PLAYOFFS MATCH-UPS ARE SET

The regular season is now finished. Mall Security finishes first overall and goes straight to the Championship game next Monday. Now the playoffs begin! THE CHUBBY COMEBACK

The SHL had the first tie game of the season today. The Siamese Uburoos and the Moonwalking Giraffes tied 1-1. Ian scored for the Giraffes in the first half and then Jack tied it up for the Uburoos and got them their first point of the year. There are only shootout games in the playoffs. The Moonwalking Giraffes edged out the Chubby Ferrets 3-2 in a very close game. The game was tied 2-2 until the final minute. Cason had both goals for the Ferrets, while AJ, Bob and Carl scored for the Giraffes. Henoke made the first start of his SHL career while Kevin manned the other goal.

FERRETS OPEN WITH A WIN

The SHL season opened today with the Chubby Ferrets edging out Mall Security 3-1. Riley, Oon and Caden scored for the Ferrets and Tony scored for Mall Security. After the game Tony was told he was traded to the Fuzzy Turtles. Zaha and Jeremy were the goalies. The next game is on Monday.

By a strange coincidence I noticed that Riley, Oon and Caden were the last three in the scoring race in last year's SHL.

The SHL is about to begin for another year! A boys league will get under way on January 4th. The lunchtime games are Mon, Tues, Thurs except for one Friday game at the end of February. The schedule will be posted on this blog next week. Unfortunately, due to a lack of participation, there is no girls league for a second year in a row.

In a stunning finish the Stanley Cupcakes won 4-3 in the shootout over the Yellow Crayons. They scored two goals in the last two minutes to tie the game and then won on the first penalty shot. Connor scored a hat-trick and scored the shootout winner. Carson and Connor were on offence for the Cupcakes in the second shift and found a way to manufacture some goals in the final moments of the game. Then Connor fired a perfect shot into the goal on the first shot in the shootout. Andy, A.J. and Remey scored for the Crayons. Jackson and Riley were the goalies.

In the fastest game of the year the Tangy Mangoes won 4-3 over the Funky Rhinos. Play was end to end for the entire game. There was one unbelievable goal and one awesome save that stunned the crowd. A last minute goal gave the Tangy Mangoes a 5-4 win over the Stanley Cupcakes. Zaha had a hat-trick for the winners, while Brian scored the game winning goal. For the Cupcakes, Carson scored his first two goals of the year and Jeremy and Ricky scored singles. Alex J. and Jackson were in goal. Jackson made SHL history with a backhanded flip that went the length of the court, through the basketball net and almost into the other hockey net.

For the fourth time in four games we had another close contest. Larry and the Llamas edged out the Westside Wingers 6-5 in an exciting game. Due to a number of players on the injured list a few Grade 6 and 7 students filled in. Mr. Rennie led the way for the Wingers with a hat-trick and Mr. Burrus continues to lead the lead by adding two more. For the Llamas, Mr. Cawood and Robert each had a pair, while Garrett and Jeremy added singles. Riley and Devin were in net.

The Slammin' Cheeka Cheeka Yas has got to be one of the longest team names in the history of sports. Yeah that's right Lindsay...it's long...it's really good...but it's also long. Anyway...back to the SHL...the Slammin' Cheeka Cheeka Yas won 1-0 over their rivals the Atomic Randomizers. The Yas captain, Lindsay, surprised Brian with a quick shot and got the only goal of the game. Her brother, Jeremy, was the other goalie in the game.

THE THUNDER IS RISING!

The Thunderbolts moved back into first place after a last second victory over the Question Marks. The 5-4 win was definitely one of the best played games ever in the SHL. Thomas H. scored with only a few seconds left to win the game for the Bolts. Devin and Jeremy each added a pair for the Bolts as well. Lachlan had a hat-trick for the Marks and Alex S. added a single. There were many scoring chances and lots of amazing saves by Jackson and Alex J. The one area that could have been better was the passing. A few more goals would have been scored if some players would have passed more to the wide open player. However, it was an incredible game.

FIRST MEETING FOR THE 2008/2009 SEASON

There will be a meeting very soon for all players to talk about the league at Southlands this year. It looks as if there will be a girls league with two teams, a boys league with three teams and a teachers league with two teams. The boys will probably play Tues and Thurs, with the girls playing on Wed and the teachers on Fridays. All games start at 1230pm and the two teams playing will set up at 1220pm.

League rules and the season schedule will also be discussed at the meeting. The main schedule will also be on this blog this year.

THE GNOMES WIN THE SMILING FRISBEE!

The Gnomes won the first annual SHL Boys Championship today. It was a back and forth game and eventually the Gnomes scored eleven goals to the Jets six. Garde had another five goal game, Josh scored four and Robert added a pair for the Gnomes. Replying for the Jets were Gabe with a hat-trick, Jeremy with a pair and Mason with one. Gabe's last goal was spectacular as he broke in on a breakaway, deked the goalie and slid past the net as he scored. Garde ends the year as the scoring leader with eighteen goals in nine games. Ryo and Zaha were the goalies.

WHAT A GAME!

It was a treat for all the fans today in the Southlands Hockey League. Amazing goals, pretty passing plays and outstanding goaltending. The Boys League regular season ended with the Gnomes triumphing over the Raptors 9-6. Garde set a league record with five goals and also won the goal scoring title. He even tipped in one of his goals after Jacob fired a shot from the point. Those five goals added to Robert's hat-trick and Nicholas's single goal to lift the Gnomes to another win. Austin and Jason both had hat-tricks for the Raptors. Jackson and Alex put on a clinic with several phenomenal saves...including Alex's stunning glove stopping a point blank shot.

The Gnomes edged out the Jets 4-3 today. The win enables the Gnomes to finish first and win the League title. It looks as if they will play the Jets in the Championship game. Josh and Jacob scored two goals a piece as the brother combination worked very well for the Gnomes. Look out Sedins! Jackson replied with two goals for the Jets and Justin added one. Apparently your name had to begin with the letter 'J' to score a goal today. Ryo and Zaha were the goalies.

THE CHEEKA CHEEKA YAS WIN THE SMEOW TROPHY!

The Cheeka Cheeka Yas won the first Smeow Trophy in SHL history today. The Yas edged out the League Champions, Slammin' Powerhouses 4-2. Beth-Anne scored a hat-trick and also tied Eve for the Girls League scoring title. Kelly added the other goal for the Cheeka Cheeka Yas with a very determined play. Eve scored both goals for the Slammin' Powerhouses. Actually, the Powerhouses had many more scoring chances. The game was intense and played fairly on the National Stop Bullying Day. Zaha and Ryo were the goalies.

RAPTORS TIE WITH THE LAST SHOT!

Austin tied the game today with the very last shot. The Raptors' sniper scored his hat-trick goal lifting his team into a 5-5 tie with the Jets. It was a fast paced game with another hat-trick scored for the Jets by Mason. He is now the top goal scorer in the Boys League. A.J. and Jeremy also scored a pair of goals for their respective teams. One of the nicest plays ever seen in the SHL occured when Zachary made an amazing pass to A.J., he then roofed the shot past the goalie. Considering one team was in first place and the other in third, the game showed just how even all the teams are. Ryo and Zaha were outstanding in net. The one point earned allows the Jets to move into first place in the Boys League.

SECRET GRUMPY CAMP/BIG BIRD TRADED

Unconfirmed reports have come in that the teachers' team is at a special training camp. The winners of the two championship games will play the Grumpy Old Men in two exhibition games next week. Apparently the teachers are getting in shape and practicing at a secret location. Reports say that Gandalf and the Hammer are working on a special five-way passing play similar to the legendary Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s. Apparently Stonewall has vowed he won't let another goal in all year and the Chef is working on a new all-meat diet for the team. Meanwhile, Steamboiler and Puppetman are watching video of all the teams to look for any weaknesses.

The team is also having to deal with the loss of one of their best players. The Montreal Canadiens picked up Big Bird at the trading deadline and he is leaving the Grumpy Old Men. Apparently the team is dedicating the rest of their season to Big Bird. BON CHANCE MON AMI!

In yet another close game the Cheeka Cheeka Yas defeated the Slammin' Powerhouses 2-1. Almost every game in the Girls League has been decided by a single goal. Megan scored both goals for the Cheeka Cheeka Yas, while Katie scored the Slammin' Powerhouses' goal. The Slammin' Powerhouses win the regular season by edging out the Yas in points. Zaha and Ryo were in net. The Girls League Championship game is this coming Wednesday.
